Statement:
Over the past few years Mark and I have been collaborating on a sculptural series, entitled, Art of the Catacomb. With this body of work we want to explore questions about the nature of life and death; the impact of generations, whose bones, artifacts and vain dreams of immortality fill the earth under our feet; the significance of ritual and symbolism; and the notion of individual identity within the broader scope of the human condition.
The framework of the catacombs consists mainly of vintage typeface drawers that we disassemble and rework into unique pieces of architecture to house the mummy-forms. We sculpt the figures in low-fire clay and apply multiple layers of paint and distress them to give them an aged appearance.
The mummies transform the letterpress cells into a labyrinth of colors and forms. We want them to maintain a sense of ambiguity and detachment from any fixed identity. Our culture's fascination with mummies derives from, in part, the sense of a mystery that begs to be unraveled; they prompt us to question who we are and how we will be remembered. The Catacombs are not merely studies of the dead, but windows through which we can gaze upon humanity through time and perhaps see ourselves
