About the Paintings

This set of paintings has been developed from some of the following influences: modern music, drum n'bass, hip hop, trance, techno etc; graffiti, Japanese art and culture, modern and past, contemporary art in general and classical modernism.

Some of the works seek to create images that work as visual equivalents to music. The painter Jack Smith has said when talking about his own paintings that he is happiest when his paintings resemble a diagram. He talks of the diagram as being an equivalent to music amongst other things, for example he has done paintings which are the abstracted diagrams of day to day activities and this has influenced me. As well as the diagrammatic I am also involved in the romanticism of painting stemming back to Kandinsky, who also sought to make visual equivalents to music, he talked of musical notes having their representation visually as certain colours: synesthesia, the concept of hearing colours and seeing sounds.
Kandinsky's abstraction is where transcendentalism has it's roots: this has made itself apparent in my works through a strong aesthetic abstraction exploring harmonies against chaotic forms which have roots in natural forms.

Often the structure of the forms uses the idea of creating synesthetic diagrams fusing the traditional and natural with technological futuristic themes. Structurally the works balance between the all-over modernist Jackson Pollock shallow space and a figure field format, these fuse together as well as visually twisting, jumping from one format to another.

The spiritualism implied through transcendentalist paintings is fused with a strong Japanese style, which leads to a kind of zen aesthetic. This aesthetic balances between an influence of the traditional e.g. Hokassai, etc and a more modern vision stemming from Manga and other such anime.

Further from the spiritual aspect is a contemporary influence, a cooler construction of
sterile conceptual awareness, where the paintings contradict their leanings towards romanticism in a newer pop romanticism, or fragmentation. Here the works are nihilist/zen/fluoro-mystical and the affected nature of their conceptual positioning is sought after, as are the skills of design and craft within the works. Affected becomes a desired strain derived through the practice of style, particularly Japanesism.
