Vibeke Jensen is a Norwegian artist based in New York. She works in the interstices between photography, video and installation. She is obsessed with looking and looking devices. Many of her projects deal with the pleasures and fears of watching and being watched. She poses questions of who is watching whom, and invite the public to actively observe themselves and others. She does not see art, politics or surveillance as separate from daily life - on the contrary, they are interconnected.
Jensen is currently working on a big commission for electronic art at the University of Oslo, Norway, and an extensive public art project there. Recently her work Night_watch was shown as part of Intrude:Art & Life 366 organized by the Zendai MOMA, Shanghai. Her installation Blue Wall of Silence was commissioned for the international project Urban Interface Oslo in 2007. Jensen\\\\\\\'s work has been exhibited in the US and internationally including solo exhibitions at Platform China, Beijing and Galleri F 15, Norway 2005; Rogaland Art Center and Galleri i/o/LAB, Norway 2004; Galeria Santa Fe, Bogotá and Hordaland Art Center, Norway 2003; Trondheim Art Museum, Norway 2002; Scott Pfaffman Gallery, New York 2001; and C-Zone Comunicarte, Trieste 1999. She participated in important group exhibitions at the Bronx Museum, Smack Mellon, Dumbo Art Cebter and James Nicholson Gallery, all NY 2006, Salzburger Museum Carolino Augusteum and Österreichisches Museum für Volkskunde, Vienna 2005; Peekskill Project, NY and Detox, Norway 2004; Priska C. Juschka Fine Art, NY 2003; and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York 2000. Jensen has received numerous grants and awards from Office for Contemporary Art Norway (2008, 2005, 2004), the Norwegian Visual Artist\\\\\\\'s fond (2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 1997) and Arts Council Norway (2006, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001 2000, 1999). Her work is represented in the collections of Trondheim Art Museum, Sogn og Fjordane Art Museum and the new regional hospital in her hometown. She has enjoyed international residencies in Beijing, Norway, Vienna, Graz and Mexico City.
