Artist Statement
When drawing or painting I feel liberated from the limitations and inadequacies that other forms of communication present to me. I use a variety of visual mediums as a voice to express my own personal experience in a way that feels more potent and less compromised than I might otherwise provide. Visual image making allows me to engage with topics in an intuitive manner that offers discovery and instruction to me not only while in the act of creating, but long after completion.
I think of my art as a visual diary, recording experiences that feel important to me. I constantly document things that interest me in my sketchbook, or camera, that I will expand upon in my studio. Much of the time I start engaging in a project without a clear understanding of what I am doing or why I am doing it. Through my art I begin interacting with subject matter, such as antiquated photography and my family, for reasons that are unclear to me while in the initial phases. During the project\\\'s progression I may come to understand that I am actually addressing thoughts of the traditional atomic family as an ever changing unit, dependent upon social circumstances, pertinent to the eras they exist in.
I also associate the construction of visual art with music. A complete drawing or painting is similar to orchestrating a musical composition. Just as in composing a musical score, a successful visual composition demands that all the instruments of design work harmoniously to produce a piece that functions to create an alternate reality for the viewer. When composed effectively, these glimpses of subjective realities can transport the audience and creator to a different world that is dictated and morphed by the impulses of unconscious thought.
The production of these visual translations of my own personal experience consumes my thoughts and efforts. I find it deeply satisfying to act as composer and conductor of a visual symphony that addresses subject matter that I esteem compelling. Through the creation of imagery, I feel that I have the ability to communicate with myself and others on a level that is more direct and honest than other modes of exchange. Through constant engagement I hope to refine my ability to create and present to the world images capable of captivating and transporting those viewing my work.
