Vita / Lebenslauf:
EDEN OCAMPO was born in Manila, Philippines and was educated at Dominican schools and studied Fine Arts in advertising, interior designing and graduated in painting at an exclusive school in Manila. She liked drawing facial sketches of famous personalities found on local magazines from an early age and took an ardent interest in old masters’ paintings and sculptures. In 1982, Eden went to work as a designer in a textile company to relieve her parents from financial difficulties in supporting her brothers’ and sisters’ education. She returned to school in 1984 and finished her painting course in 1989 while having a job. She had her first one-person exhibition in 1989 of large paintings in lyrical abstraction using bold colors of acrylic paints. Most of the exhibited paintings were done on square canvases, postulating that square shape is a perfect space for a brush to paint in abstraction.

She went to live on her own in 1991 and did experimental paintings by applying textures on ply-boards using hard glue materials in circular and amorphous shapes and even puncturing holes or slashes on plain canvas cloth, that was without wood frames, and installing it similar to a commercial banner or streamer. Some of her paintings were constructed on square canvases that were attached with small square dais on surface and executed it in white and gray acrylic colors with X-strokes that symbolize her Christian belief. During this time, she was fully involved in arts and worked in an art organization and cultural center as an exhibit coordinator and often attended many exhibition openings of her artist friends. In 1997, in spite of having a regular paying job and exhibiting her paintings, Eden opted in the direction of advertising and abandoned her career in painting, for the reason that the local art communities and institutions have not as much of funds in supporting new emerging artists.

After three years of being creatively unproductive, in 2000, she started painting in oil medium on small-scale canvases that were primed in black. She delved into the astronomy symbols in expounding between her Christian beliefs and the mystifying universe. In 2006, she resolved to become a full-time painter after many years of establishing different enterprises to support her creative career. She, afterward, continued to paint on symbols and begun to have an interest in nature and observed the cyclic atmosphere lighting and panoramic beauty of Laguna lake in the Rizal province, where she is at the present residing. Here, she used textural effects on a ply-board by applying resin and subsequently crafting it into fishing nets and bamboo poles that were usually used as equipment by fishermen for their fish cage. She also took a fancy of painting on miniature clay jars in acrylic paints, emphasizing the natural form of a jar and the very challenging roundness of its contour. At present, Eden is full of activity in compiling paintings portfolio for upcoming exhibitions.
