Artist Statement 2009
The end and aim of all artistic endeavor is liberation of the spiritual essence of form and color and its release from imprisonment in the world of objects. It is from this aspiration that non-objective art has risen Joseph Itten
Since 1974, I have been actively engaged in the studio. My paintings are the embodiment of my years as an abstract reductive painter. The works strive to take reductive non-objective painting principals and oppose the notion that such works must be devoid of surface texture. The narrative abstractions which form my texture surface add additional tension, light and vibration to these minimalist color studies. Although the work has formal structure, the paint is purposely applied without sharp edge to maximize obvious implementation by human hand.
The work focuses upon geometric forms, grids, repetitive patterns, actual writing, solid panes of lushly layered intense color and the retinal response to vivid colors and textures presented in a post minimalist context. My goal has been to create objects with presence: Paintings that can be seen at their basic physical appearance and appreciated at face value.
"The artist has created richly saturated hues that immediately catch the eye. Upon closer inspection, one discovers a multi-layered, incised surface that offers a tactile experience, as well as a visual encounter. Finally the artist utilizes written words, religious symbols, number codes and abstracted markings to communicate a myriad of ideas" Rogene Cuerden 2004
"Sloane's art is that of the hand for the eye and, though not incidentally, the story is still an added value, intertwined with the materiality of her paintings, another interpretation of the current reconciliation between abstraction and representation, between modernism's pure object and postmodernist narrative" Lilly Wei Tactile Expressions 2004
