Josef Mudde van Duren
weist durch \"van Duren\" auf die Stadt Düren im Rheinland hin, in der er 1943 geboren wurde. Er arbeitete zunächst in der Werbeabteilung einer großen Firma, ging 1966 nach London und studierte am West London College Art an Crafts, Painter Class and Lower Cambridge English. 1973 folgte ein Lehramtsstudium an der Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig und ein Studium als Nebenhörer an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste. Sein Theologiestudium schloss er durch eine Wissenschaftliche Erweiterungsprüfung ab. Von 1977 bis 1999 unterrichtete er an einer Berufsfachschule, die über eine moderne Siebdruckanlage verfügte.
In diesen Jahren entstanden anspruchsvolle Serigraphien, die er auch für Kunstpädagogen und Studenten anfertigte. Ab 1999 wandte er sich ganz der Kunst zu.

Stilrichtung - Motive
MvD versucht durch Farbflächen und Linien geistige Impulse unmittelbar auszudrücken. Neben abstrakten Gemälden voller Kraft wendet er sich aber auch der figurativen Malerei zu und spürt Verletzlichkeiten, Unterdrückung und Ausgrenzung nach.
Ein wiederkehrendes Thema ist die Shoa. Seine Kunst illustriert jedoch keine Zeitgeschichte, sondern verweist auf die dem Individuum zugefügten Beschädigungen.
Er zeigt \"Orte\" der Erinnerung, die gleichnis- und zeichenhaft Spuren in sich tragen. Teilweise verwendet er hebräische Schriftzeichen und Symbole, die auf altsemitiche Bildzeichen zurückgehen.
Nach 2001 entstehen Bild und Text kombinierte Arbeiten (lyrische Darstellungsform). Ein typisches Beispiel ist das work of art \"The Spirit of the Pilots\", das sich im \"The Jewish Museum, Raymond Burton House\" in London befindet. Zu der Bild-Text-Kombination schreibt

Weitere Ausstellungsorte (Auswahl) sind das Brückenhofmuseum in Königswinter, das Kloster Loccum, das Dokumentations- und Informationszentrum (DIZ) Emslandlager, das Kloster Esterwegen, das Jüdische Bethaus in Freren, der Gedenkort Jüdische Schule in Lingen, die Synagoge in Osnabrück, die Alte Synagoge in Essen, das Nelly-Sachs-Haus in Düsseldorf, das Arye Maimon-Institut der Universität Trier, G.G.M. van Looij-Wouda in Amsterdam, Collectie Brands in Nieuw Dordrecht (NL) und die Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken.
An der Ausstellung \"Ein gewisses jüdiches Etwas\" im Jüdischen Museum München war MvD 2008 mit seinem Acrylbild \"Josefs letzter Traum\" beteiligt.
