Statement:
My large paintings continue to probe natural forms and atmospheric environments in the universe, on earth, and psychologically. My larger works often focus on aerial views of water and land. Natural forces of destruction and rebirth challenge my art. Thematically these natural cycles involve unpredictability as well as inevitability. This dichotomy also encompasses society and man on a microcosmic/individual or more personal level. Powers of good and evil and the unknown are also often thematically interlaced in my art through color and hints of figural abstractions.
The unknown inspires me since its existence is not definite or static. There is always an element of surprise when a specific acrylic-stain layer dries in a particular manner. The wet paint interacts with specific colors in accordance with various temperature and humidity levels in unique ways sometimes. Exactly how it will dry is the ultimate question. So I often wonder, why do certain events happen? What is the driving force behind them? Why does it rain when it is supposed to hail? Some questions are not meant to be answered. Yet they still exist and pique our interests.
How are my layers of paint interacting as an entirety? What lies beneath this particular surface layer? Perhaps these layers of paint hint at hidden dimensions of meaning. Overall, my work intends to represent reality in a manner which borders abstraction and “realism.”

I am Cyclops... Why do I call myself Cyclops? I adopt that singular vision necessary to focus on my art in this fast-paced, media-driven, multi-tasking world. So, am I really a cyclops? I might feel like one alone in my studio for countless hours. Yet, I choose to paint out of a need to and personally thrive when my art comes together. Similar to the cyclical themes my paintings often embrace, I find myself comfortable secluded in the studio for long periods. Sometimes these periods are longer than others. Other times the time is “crunched” or sandwiched into a hectic schedule. Regardless, “long periods” of studio time is a relative term depending upon the calendar (which may often seem to exist in a state of flux).
I have several thematic series that I currently work on concerning natural abstract forms. One of the most recent series of paintings, involves creating hybrid animals (also referred to as transformative or transgenic animals) which in turn, are a part of me. Most of these creatures are fabrications. However, this fictitious/“unknown” or recently discovered animal on the canvas, which is part acrylic-stain, part brushstroke, part sand, and finished with a polycrylic, protective layers, embodies an unusual energy. I am not really into totemic topics. But, perhaps I am on a subconscious level.
Generally, natural cyclical themes ranging from the “extremes” to states of transition to “the unknown” continue to inspire my artwork. However, I am also driven by current events and trends. Specifically, I have named a current (contemporary) trend, “Blue Flame.” Another name for this theme includes Global Warming. Other names I have generated for the “Blue Flame” Movement are: Blue Warning, Blue Ghost, Ghost of the Storm, Indigo Melt, Glacial Flow, Ultramarine Heat, etc. The blue part of the flame has the higher temperature (faster electromagnetic particle properties and shorter wavelengths or “fields” of energy rather). Yet, the color blue somehow has a cooling, calming effect on the eye or psyche. This hot-cool property of “blue” is unusual and ironically characteristic of the water planet. I do not intend my art to be propaganda nor didactic. Ironically, this extreme trend can be both serious in nature or not. It can represent love, attraction, interest, destruction, rebirth, spirit, enlightenment, belief, etc. It is open to interpretation as a spark, on the verge of collapse, terminating a cycle, yet renewing another. Some see the flame as eternal.
I have sent several paintings all over the US for international and national juried exhibitions. My art has appeared in international publications (books and magazines), have won a couple of awards, and I recently participated in a Biennale in Italy. I’ve shown solo sporadically since I have moved every 3-5 years for health, economic, and academic reasons. I have a BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA in Painting from BU in IL. Despite the education, my abstract creations have a “raw” sense. One could call the art, Pseudo-Raw. Nobody teaches creativity or innate abilities. Discipline, study, and guidance may be achieved at school or on one’s own. Conclusively, rather than formalize this brief biographic/ art introduction to death, I invite you, the viewer, to experience my paintings by looking for yourself and decide if it ignites a spark.
