Artist Statement
I define painting as a spontaneous mental talking that is manifested in physical actions. This series expresses my internal dialogue about the female body, sexuality, and cultural identity.
The compositions I create are random and interconnected environments that intend to nurture and become homes for the figures. In my efforts to create totality in the environments I become distracted by the medium and begin to apply layers of light, textures, and shapes. Set against the chalky pink and yellow backgrounds, vibrating orange splashes are offset by my contradictory suggestions of decorative florals and bubbly figures. The figures are comical and cartoon like renderings of female nudes that are transformed into "Snoopy" inspired forms. These vessel and pod like figures along with drippings and radiant candy colors serve to evoke a hurried and anxious girly satire. In this intimate language, I explore these themes using images that evoke humor, vulnerability, heroism, and subtle violence.
