Kunstart: Skulptur

Stil: Moderne

Statement:
Barton Rubenstein is a nationally renowned sculptor and public artist. He has completed over 50 public art projects around the United States, and international. These include state projects, corporate, commercial and academic institutions as well as private residences. He typically works with bronze, stainless steel, stone and glass. Fascinated with various elements of nature, Rubenstein focuses on water, kinetics, light, and suspension to create sculpture that surprise and excite the viewer.

"The goal of my artwork is first to create a level of intrigue, and then to allow for the gradual discovery of its secrets and complexities."

Using bronze and brushed stainless steel shapes that are sensitive to the slightest waft of air and the force of moving water, water and kinetic sculpture can add a shimmering brilliance of energy and life to a site. Kinetic sculpture may also have no moving components, but have a suspended design, which appears to defy gravity. Sculptures of these forms can create a dynamic and inviting space for people to congregate or perhaps pause for a solitary moment of reflection.

Qualifications for Creating Public Art
Creating public art is the combination of designing elegant and aesthetically impressive artwork while symbolically connecting the sculpture to the site. Rubenstein has worked with numerous public art committees in the past and has a strong reputation as an artist who develops a design that both incorporates the interests of the committee and yet maintains a strong artistic expression. Rubenstein has a particular niche in the United States for the innovative use of water and movement in his artwork and the criteria of this project offer an excellent opportunity for developing a unique and spectacular work of art.

To date, Rubenstein has been awarded numerous public art commissions as the result of National Competitions, with projects ranging from universities, parks, libraries, veterans homes, to large state projects. Rubenstein has also completed other public art projects, including banks, commercial properties, community centers, and office buildings. To date, budgets extend up to $300,000. Each of these opportunities has given Rubenstein the opportunity to work extensively with many professionals, including architects, engineers, landscape architects, and various subcontractors.

Artist's Approach:
As a sculptor, Rubenstein has concentrated much of his artistic efforts in the creation of water and kinetic art. His fascination with water and kinetics is rooted in a love of sailing and canoeing through the wilderness lakes and rivers of Maine and Canada. Certainly, as if some mysterious primordial force were at work, the force of wind and sounds of water penetrate and mesmerize one's soul like no other material. Whether it is water gliding around stones of the river, a raging waterfall, or leaves fluttering in the wind, water and wind can elicit a sense of delight or pensive introspection. Focused on these elements of nature, Rubenstein attempts to evoke similar emotions from his artwork.

Durability, Maintenance, and Reliability:
The materials used at Rubenstein Studios are primarily bronze, stainless steel, and stone, which are extremely durable, do not rust or corrode, and require little maintenance. All sculptures are carefully engineered to withstand high winds (up to 120 mph), severe climates, and can withstand the accumulation of snow/ice.

Creating water and kinetic sculpture involves knowledge of many disciplines. As a former scientist and engineer, Rubenstein is experienced in plumbing, electricity, and structural issues, all which are important when designing a sculpture.

All kinetic sculptures use a unique internal cable system, designed by the sculptor (patent-pending), which allows moving components to wind up in one direction, and then recoil in the other. Unlike continuously spinning objects, this engineering design creates a "dance" effect, creating motion that is both smooth and rhythmical, and thus emulating human movement and attributes.

Artwork is fabricated at Rubenstein Studios and requires 2-6 months to create. Rubenstein Studios recycles all materials that can be recycled.
