Imagine a tactile field of luminous disks, alive with ever-changing reflections. From far away they look like pin pricks of light winking in and out. Up close they solidify into thousands of identical metallic circles forming an undulating surface. This is the vision that inspires my work.
My pieces come to life through the assemblage of thousands of silver and gold thumbtacks. I find the construction process to be meditative and rejuvenating. My mind rests as I focus intuitively again and again on where and how to place each individual tack. I use flat-headed silver thumbtacks because they reflect light differently depending on the angle placed, type of light present, and the viewer’s position.
The inspiration for my work came from a combination of seeing artist Ned Kahn’s use of reflective surfaces and African stools decorated with thumbtacks. Using everyday objects like thumbtacks appeals to me for the added reason that it transforms something mundane into something fresh and adds whimsy to the final piece.
