About In America: Reflections into the Soul of Modern Society
In America is a painterly look at the state of modern society from the point of view of economics. In this series of paintings, Buckley paints what it feels like to be a middle age, middle class, Anglo-American, living in the United States today. The paintings personify the economic crisis of our times as satirical metaphors on life. Generations from now, these paintings will offer a glimpse into what it was like to be alive today, and will serve as an iconic record of our times a la Norman Rockwell.
Artist Statement
“A combination of events inspired my In America series. A couple of years ago Roger Milliken, asked me to paint how the middle class is getting poorer while the upper class is getting richer, in context with our turning away from our Hamiltonian principles. Thinking of Hamilton led me to think of money. All aspects of our lives, to a great degree, revolve around economics. The symbols in our currency represent our forefathers' ideals for our nation. The dollar is the most recognized non-religious symbol in the world. Juxtaposing the symbols in our currency, with allegorical social commentaries of life in America, I express my take on things.”
“What I most enjoy about these paintings is that they have served as a bridge between my mind and that of many. In painting about being overwhelmed by bills, crushed by love, stymied in a divorce, and feeling helpless in the hands of greater powers, I found that many people feel my pain. I envision these paintings as being representative of an era, and believe they will accrue great value with time.”
In America: the Series
The artist has painted thirty three of the one hundred images projected to complete the series. He has also drawn sixty five ideas for additional paintings. You can look over the drawings to buy, or to commission one as a painting.
The greatest patrons in History were the Popes. Art cannot happen without patronage. Sponsor this series by investing in purchasing a painting. It will be a worthwhile investment, and pure enjoyment.

Vita / Lebenslauf:
Buckley began selling his art work in 1976, and has made a full time career of painting since 1985. His art is hung in public spaces, and hundreds of private homes in the three Americas and Europe. Among his collectors stand out various CEO’s and Presidents of several Fortune 500 corporations. Milliken and Company Textile Mills is his staunchest corporate sponsor. A portrait by him of his uncle, the Honorable James L. Buckley, hangs in the U.S. Court of Appeals, in Washington, DC. He is the first United States citizen to have painted the King of Spain.
Born in Madrid, in1959, his Spanish influence is apparent in his paintings. His American parents were very involved in the arts, and he was surrounded by art and artists since his earliest childhood. Reared one block from the Prado Museum, he spent listless afternoons wandering its cavernous halls, breathing in the art of Spain’s Masters. At the Teatro Español, he often played with actors and stage hands, during the rehearsals of many classical plays and modern dance recitals. It seemed natural that he became an artist.
Receiving his upper education in the United States, he graduated from the University of the South, class if 1980. He moved to a New York loft on the Bowery, where he painted the homeless who lived on his block. During the day he worked as a sculptors’ assistant, finishing several AT&T Golden Boy Award trophies. At night, he attended continuing education classes at Parsons School of Design, and the New York Center for the Media Arts.
Granted an internship by South Carolina Educational Television, he moved to Charleston, SC. There he painted portraits and street scenes until he returned to Spain with his bride in 1985. The first couple of years he painted the towns and ports of northern Spain, selling sixty eight landscapes in two weeks in an exhibition in the fishing village of Comillas.
During the next five years he painted 26 portraits, and 9 murals in the Community of Madrid as well as 170 oil landscapes in Castile. Fourteen of these he later sold at the Union League Club, In New York, 1991. He returned to the United States to raise a family. Since then he has painted the bulk of his art work from his picturesque studio in the woods. There he resides with his children, Ian and Aidan in Camden, SC. He continues to travel worldwide attending to his commissions.
