Vita / Lebenslauf:
Gigi Cau’s artistic profile

The artist Luigi Peppino Cau, with the stage name of Gigi Cau, is an artist that stands out for his expressionist style with a strong chromatic accentuation and an incisive sign. A style that suits well with the contents of his works of art, often linked to topical subjects that are important for the inner life of the individual. Therefore, a painting that wants to communicate passionately ideas and feelings and through which the artist invites his public to reflect upon them.
In 2008 the art critic Convertino artistic has analyzed Gigi’s debut and the most recent production, and she defines this production \" New Scenic Ermetismo\", a kind of social denunciation where the expressive strength concentrates on the forms and in the symbols. Following you can find the whole art critic analysis.

Gigi Cau: A New Scenic Ermetismo

by Isabella Convertino

“Art is the only mean to survive the reality”, it is what Friedrich Nietzsche said.

All that the individual produces and creates with his own hands belongs to the reality, and it is able to build and educate it.
Art is life, it is dream, it is love, it is an endless thought that originates from the heart and soul, from the internal sphere and still more, it is determined by the history that we live.
Thus the artist is who doesn\'t accept only to live in a world built previously by the events, by history, by the time, by the technology, by the injustice and by the cruelty of beings, on the contrary, according to a strong internal necessity, he thinks about creating an impenetrable shelter where to live alone and where to be able to describe with sincere eyes the world and things.
The artist Gigi Cau nourishes himself of Art: he breathes the perfumes of his nature, he listens to the dialogue of his souls and describes the big flaws of the current society.
Imagination becomes an essential survival tool, that conducts him toward an ample dimension where he is able to express himself, to converse with himself and to reveal the violence and the incommunicability of the real world.
\"The first Cau\", and I’m referring to his first production, appears confident and altruist, creating figurative works with a symbolic and descriptive character, where it prevails the study of particular ogival faces and biblical themes, of magic atmospheres and aggregations of forms through a hermetic language, that is always present, also in his second artistic phase.
I would define it scenic Ermetismo, that of Cau, that is a language composed by pictorial palimpsests, where the representation is a human tragedy, a sort of social report where expressive strength assembles itself in the forms and symbols.
Thus \"the second Cau\", has matured this strength, that has become a tool to make to emerge some brutal truths as the genetic manipulation, euthanasia and abortion making the Artist a Man that lives its time.
The rich pictorial production of Cau is to be catalogued in the Modern art.
The beginning of the Modern Art refers to artists that belong to the ninenteenth century, such as Rosseau, Van Gogh with the tormented and aching visions of an emotional painting, by the modern sensibility that leaded the theories of Freud; and we finally think about Munch that represented the condition of man in solitude in the relationship with history that didn\'t see him as a protagonist.
Then Modern Art starts with the individual that runs away from the west as in Gaugin, or with the individual that transmits anxiety and illness as in Munch.
Gigi Cau, initially impressed by the luxurious and “neo-Byzantine” dimension of Klimt, that can coincide with his first pictorial phase, passes to a deeper and dramatic vision, where one cannot smile or admire only the drawing, but on the contrary one has to believe in life and improve the world.
Rosseau itself write a manifesto against war and violence even if tragedy is showed in a symbolic way without a real tragedy, as also in the Picasso\'s Guernica, where there is the feeling of something that passes and moves, but not that of a true tragedy.
Therefore, those of Cau are posters without pathos, in them prevail the dreamy dimension, the irony and the joy in the tragedy.
Gigi Cau approach the themes of life, death and love with a taste for the strong colors and for the marked expressive brushstroke; it prevails a curved graphic line, and in the arrangement there is not a stable plan but destabilizing elements that underline the tragedy and incommunicability of the individual.
