About the Artist
I was born in Manchester,England in 1951.
I have spent all of my life living in the beautiful North of England and currently live in the famous Bronte village of Haworth in West Yorkshire.
I am married to Sandra, also an artist, and we have two dogs.
After leaving art college in 1969, I was apprenticed to a jewellery manufacturer in central Manchester.
By the mid 1970s I was working on the design and construction of adventure playgrounds in a number of deprived, inner-city locations.
In the early 80s I started a business painting narrowboats and their accessories.
By the mid 80s I had joined my parents antiques business as a furniture restorer and copy-maker.
Upon my parents retirement, I joined Bradford Council as an art & craft instructor for people with physical disabilities. I also took up an evening teaching post at Bradford College and created an art course specifically for students with learning difficulties.
My booklet,'Towards Inclusion', written during this period is still in use amongst those who are new to working with special needs students.
After a devastating illness, I decided to make my own artwork my main priority.
Throughout my life I have endevoured to stage at least one exhibition per year. I have also organised and exhibited in many hundreds of joint exhibitions, projects and workshops.
My first solo exhibition was in a small provincial Cheshire gallery in 1966, at the age of fifteen.
Some Milestones
In the 1970s my work was exhibited at the Brighter Homes Exhibition and the Manchester gallery of Modern Art; in the 80s at the Liverpool Academy and the 90s at Bradford's Design Centre.
A major artpiece at the turn of the century gained me a Millennium Fellowship from the government, for service to community arts and I have recently been awarded a Community Champion's award for social integration through art.
