Statement:
My grandfather was an amateur photographer who documented our family’s history. My grandmother told family stories using his images as a reference point. My idea of memory has been formed by what I have been told, viewed, and read. The influence of images and words has transformed my concepts of memory. Subsequently, new and old stories are intermixed, create a past and present tense voice, and speak to a new generational history.

Referencing the human experience of family, my installations use photographs to create a pathway into the past. These pictures present us with an untouchable place we can only re-visit again through memory. Some of the photographs retain evidence of recollections, which become a metaphor for the fragmentation of memory and the desire to recapture those ephemeral moments.

Discarded objects as well as ones passed down to me by my family, become personal keepsakes and icons of the past, which would otherwise be overlooked or regarded as something useless. My collections represent a sense of holding onto a place in time. By re-creating these objects through casting and re-fabrication, I recast the history of these objects in as part of my own current voice.

I create installations that examine commonplace objects and subtle images, which evoke an ephemeral sense of familiarity with the past. These photographs and objects become iconic in themselves. They allude to the tangible evidence of a portal to a moment and the temporal narratives evoked by image and memory.

My installations conserve and preserve my family’s personal narratives, which then become abstract imagery through which a universal audience can relate to experiences of their own.

Artistic Goals

As an artist, my goal is to exhibit, lecture and conduct workshops. It is important to me to experiment with my work technically, educate myself further in a multitude of media, and challenge myself conceptually to broaden the themes and content in my work. I seek reviews and critical recognition. I want to expand exhibiting my work in different parts of the country and the world.
