Bio / Resumee / Statement:
Born in Rotten Row Glasgow in Glasgow when the west Coast of Scotland still had an industrial base. This meant spending a childhood surrounded by people working in industry and that gives a very solid grounding for life.
You tend to look at things in a very definite way, black is black etc.
This attitude is carried into art when you are told things have to be portrayed in a very definite way you are discouraged from looking at art in an any way that might be unrealistic and it was only when I broke away from this line of thinking that my work started to take on a life of its own.
After being made redundant at I decided I had had enough of doing the right thing and contacted Galleries with the intention that they take some of my work. That was in August 2003 and I now have galleries across Scotland, England and Spain.
I have always been enthusiastic about experimenting with different mediums, creating images rather than just representing what I see even though realism was a starting point, I believe you have to evolve as a painter otherwise you stagnate.
The never ending quest to improve and to capture something more on canvas than a pleasing scene is the powerful driving force that keeps my work evolving.

A Brush With Art

If you have even a passing interest in art then this is the event for you. And even if you don\'t buy art or have never set foot in a gallery then this is the chance to go to a gallery and meet an artist and see how it is done.
J. P. McLaughlin has bravely agreed to produce a painting in Christo’s Gallery in Glasgow on Sunday the 12th of February. Rarely would you get the chance to meet an artist at work but to watch one work and to be able to talk to him as he is working should prove to be a great experience.
The subject will be figurative and produced from a blank canvas in the gallery. This is a unique opportunity and not to be missed.
J P will show the finished painting in Christo’s on the 3rd of March for his solo show, giving those people who went to see how it was done the chance to see how it is presented for the gallery.
