Karen Weihs

Kunstart: Malerei
Stil: Gegenständlich

Statement:
As an oil painter and colorist, I love to create images that depict endless visual space. Forsaking all details, I conjure patterns of light, air and reflection that feel ethereal and diffused. Layered pigments, contrasting colors and geometric shapes breathe life into my images, and while my landscapes are minimal in representational content, I find viewers often see the familiar in the abstract. by sparking the human imagination. My images can be interpreted in highly personal ways: as apparitions of guiding spirits as music for the eyes, or colorful montages of forgotten memories. By celebrating humanity and the goodness of the earth, my paintings represent scenes and moments of universal experience, with extraneous details rendered indistinct by swipes of thick paint from my palette knife.

I want my paintings to challenge viewers to rediscover what is most important to their own fulfillment, to think more deeply and be fully aware of the tapestry of life that surrounds and nurtures all. For me, making art is a state of ecstasy and of grace, and I seek to share that feeling by applying pigment, palette and brush to canvas and creating exhilarating displays of color and form.

Becoming a confident and competent professional fine artist has been a reluctant journey, yet I am honored by my role as painter and teacher to translate a divine message of beauty into the worldly language of art. I wrote my book, “Out of My Mind: Life Lessons as an Oil Painter,” to both impart my knowledge painstakingly gained from decades of painting and to explain my spirituality and dedication in helping others reconnect with their inner artistic spirit. Painting brings me closer to life, and to me, everyone’s life is to be experienced creatively.

Vita / Lebenslauf:
Karen Weihs is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, with a BFA from the University of Georgia. She began her professional career in 1972 as a graphic designer for the Sea Pines Corporation. She later married restaurateur Chris Weihs and assisted him in developing and operating seven restaurants in Charleston before retiring from the business in 1999. While raising their two sons, Weihs started showcasing her oil paintings in the family’s restaurants.
In 1994, Weihs opened her first gallery with partners in Charleston and later co-founded a second gallery, Weihs & Woods Fine Art, in Cashiers, North Carolina. Retired from ownerships of galleries and restaurants, she presently divides her time between her home in Asheville, North Carolina, and Skylight Farm, her second home and art studio in Cashiers. Every summer, Weihs hosts oil painting workshops at her Skylight Farm studio and conducts workshops throughout the US. In 1999, Weihs authored her first art book, “Out of My Mind: Life Lessons as an Oil Painter.” Now in its second edition, the book is a companion volume for her workshops, in which she teaches the foundations of fine art while motivating students to cultivate their inner creative spirit. Dubbed “Seminarts,” her workshops and teachings explore ways to harness intuitively the marvelous potential of human imagination. Says Weihs, “If you become confident in your own creativity, it will reward you. There is always risk involved, but the only failure is not trying.” The life-changing wisdom found in her book and teachings spring from her deep spirituality and dedication to her role as artist, teacher and seeker.
