Vita / Lebenslauf:
Precursors

In this body of work I explore alchemy, humanity, perceptions of the underworld, and the transformative process through the subject of methamphetamine and its precursors.

In society, old familiar products, like cold tablets and drain cleaner, suddenly become transmuted to the new enemies of the state. Society once again loses control of a part of itself. The market of human addiction to dopamine-based euphoria dictates, nature and chaos seize control. To the meth cook, these ordinary household products make an alchemical recipe yielding a super human reality. The spirit of ingenuity is reborn in American Dreamers who believe in making their own mind altering products, using garage or kitchen chemistry. Meanwhile, The US government desperately tries to exorcise the demon meth and all of its precursors and familiars. Well intentioned products are being bastardized and forced to perform evil, demonic work.

I like my works to take on an alternate color spectrum, as if viewed in the infra-red or gamma wavelengths. The images seem to have been generated from a medical or security scanner, looking for something hidden, evil, dangerous in an ordinary package or container. The old product fades into the background, the scanner image is revealed. Alchemy symbols appear, like hidden brand logos, indicative of a new alternate use for the products. The bright psychedelic colors expose an altered state of reality, as if the viewer is intoxicated. As in nature they are also warning signs of poison and danger.

I identify with the stamped out, clean sameness of each container and product image. This series is printed on vinyl to reflect this industrial mass produced sameness. In the early 1950s plastics represented a new beginning for America, where wonderful new futuristic materials promised to preserve our food and keep our homes immaculate. Mass produced products make promises of exactness and equality. Each portion or dose is the same; no one gets more or better than anyone else. This idea opposes the production of small batches of home made meth, which vary from one to the next, and can contain impurities. I want the vinyl to highlight the contrast between the utopian concept of mass production for the common good vs. the individualistic home made, clandestine, do-it-yourself distortion of the American Dream.

All works in this series are 22 x 30 inches, Ink Jet prints on white vinyl.
