Yannis Koutsouradis:

Sculpture as an affirmation of optimism

By Athanassios X. Varlamis *

Yannis Koutsouradis is an artist of that generation, which has indeed put forward praiseworthy and renowned sculptors, whom gave a fresh impulse in the realm of contemporary sculpture. Been himself also a student of the master sculptor Yannis Pappas, Koutsouradis worked initially in Greece and after a period of travels, he was finally established in the Netherlands. Soon he became a pioneering creative artist in his field. However he often comes back to his homeland and presents his work. Been a sea – child, in him palpitates the undulation of the maritime dream – the seashores of the native country, and his grip of the ancient values - been his conscience, are all fermented and transformed into his work and through his quest of the modern knowledge and research.
The element of abstraction in the work of Yannis Koutsouradis offer an immediate reference to the value of light, while at the same time evokes exaltation - a burst of feelings of positive-ness. His sculptures stand firmly on earth while at the same time always transcend towards the sky. It is a genuine aesthetic expression which through its formation testifies a metaphysical affirmation of a prospect of optimism. Koutsouradis is daring to colour the material, and the form is painterly revitalized – becomes immediate, the colour red is unified with that of the blood, and the blue with that of heaven and the surrounding tints. In such a way living palpitates, the creative sculpture cooperates and co-exists with the inhabitants around it. But also with the travellers - in the case of the sculpture ‘Celestial' which is mounted on the upper deck of a cruise-liner, and becomes an everyday experience to the voyager, to the people in general, offering them the joy of life and of aesthetics. Ingredients so much sought after from the contemporary man, having lost them to the distortion of nature and of his living environment.
Yannis Koutsouradis among other works has realized sculptures of a large scale for over-ocean vessels for the United States. He constructed them according tο open-sea specifications, out of stainless steel and coloured porcelain enamel; he did so in advanced technology workshops in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. The sculptures have been placed οn the upper deck of these boats, on an especially designed architectural space. They are the only open-air works in these floating museums, which also carry works by artists like Roy Lichttenstein, John Chamberlain, Anish kapour, Christo, Tony Ursler, Jeff Koons, and other well known artists.

(*) Athanassios X. Varlamis, as a cultural journalist of the Greek weekly financial newspaper ‘AXIA’, has published the above text in a two pages presentation about the sculptor.
