Coastline Series
The Scottish Coastline, movement made solid by nature, force and our own interaction, is the current focus of Maggie Mowbray's works. The pieces are not intended as direct representations, but as a reaction and an intuitive connection to various observations and locations. The works are abstract, images are torn and overlapped, collaged and recreated, inscriptions of minimalist black and white fragile lines meet with mass and form. The continuous deterioration caused by the elements, persists in creating new forms, it is the fragility of this cycle which is echoed in the use of materials; paper, ink and graphite, natural products but which even after refinement are delicate and at risk of being damaged. The pieces are process driven; mark making and construction are central to the works, the energy which is bound in making a mark or form and in the spaces in between, help to create a non verbal discourse.
Another factor in making the works is that of the palimpsest. former works and objects are reused to create other works, often some of the previous work is still visible or integral to the new piece. Similarly, the coastline continually recreates itself washing or blowing away a surface layer and leaving traces of old with new images.
More recent work challenges our attitude to materialism and ceremony.
