Between The Times
New works by Nir Mazliah

The series of new works by Nir Mazliah seeks to capture “the decisive moment” in which – and after which – nothing will be as it was. As in his previous series he is influenced by cinematic concepts in which he – like a cinematic auteur – formulates an internal system of connections that create a world in which all the elements abide by that system.
The works deal with issues of place, the constant search for home, identity, displacement and return, the trauma that occurs at that decisive moment, when it is not always clear if it has already taken place or is about to at any moment.
The works revolve around the same recurring elements, like a dream that is dreamt night after night, with minor variations. The paintings present, in varying hierarchies, a house, a landscape, a figure or portrait that intermingle into a warped, distorted reality that disrupts the existing, comfortable order and creates a disturbing and charged position.
When examining the entire body of works one can discern in it a group of binary oppositions, semantic motifs, and the permanent worlds in which they occur. In each of the works one element occupies the foreground, the “focus”, whereas the others constitute its setting, its place, its anchor. They move like a vinyl record turning on its spindle, and each time a different element is the subject of the painting.
The atmosphere is continuous and stretches between the paintings, creating a broad and poetic statement illuminating the dream into life, and blurring life into the dream, to a situation wherein it is unclear what is reality and what is fiction. The works’ subjects are from available images, ready-mades borrowed from photographs and the realities of others; frozen frames of motion pictures that continue to constitute a source of inspiration for the artist, from websites dealing with news and politics, memories, nostalgia, and distant cultures.
Mazliah unifies all these and rewrites them in his own handwriting, weaves the seemingly random images into the unresolved, yet fully deciphered story of his family in Europe before they immigrated to Israel. Forests and houses he was never in become a momentary anchor and refuge. It is a safe, protective haven that also varies, changes, and is wide open.
In this series, the choice of adhering to a minimal black and white palette expropriates the images from place and time, and associates them with a nostalgic look at a reality that has taken place or will take place in the future. The decisive moment seeks to capture them “between tenses”, between past and present, between safe and abandoned, between comforting and deterring and frightening. The works draw their visibility and inspiration from distant places, and the light in them is alien and different to Israeli light. The story they tell, however, is a narrative that unfolds from exile to the Land of Israel, and back from it to a kind of bizarre hybrid reality.
The relationship between the elements in the works reveals the inner tensions in them. The figures return rationally and regressively to childhood, a faded memory, and abstract yearning.
