Mike Bartlett

Kunstart: Malerei
Technik: Ölmalerei

Statement:
Mike Bartlett is a visual storyteller who makes images that are intended to intrigue and amuse.

His work tends to be fairly small in scale because he wants to encourage the viewer to look closely, to read each image as if it were a story that can be read and re-read. The intention is that each viewer gives meaning by interpreting what he or she sees.

Working in series, he often starts by asking “what if” about something that interests him. This could be an event, a place,
or something autobiographical. However, It doesn’t matter to Mike that those who see his work may not be aware of the how or why of the starting point.

He works directly and intuitively, using pencil, water based crayons gouache or acrylic on paper and canvas, editing as he goes. Shadows and glimpses of things, places and events appear as he works, aesthetic decisions are made, each contributing to forming a story in his head that helps the image on its way.
To where? That’s up to you.

Vita / Lebenslauf:
Mike Bartlett studied at Wimbledon School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he co edited Ark magazine. Subsequently he contributed articles on art and art history to the Oldbourne Press and was an exhibitor in the first Kinetic Art and Concrete Poetry International.

As a Lecturer in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art he was instrumental in introducing new materials and formal approaches to art practice, helping to expand the creative opportunities available to students, becoming responsible for time-based media within the Fine Art degree, and eventually heading Media Arts at the University of Plymouth.

A period with the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education followed entailing numerous visits as a specialist reviewer to monitor art, design, and media departments. As a review coordinator he was also responsible for overseeing the review of other subjects, including architecture.

He has worked in a variety of media including stained glass, and was represented in the Arts Council UK touring exhibition “Modern Stained Glass”. You can see an early commission at Gino’s Restaurant in Exeter. He also collaborated with Ian Hamilton Finlay, executing his first glass poem. He has exhibited in group shows including at the Bear Lane Gallery Birmingham and Laing Art Gallery Newcastle. Related to his long interest in horses was a time as an equestrian photographer with work published in the Horse and Hound magazine. Mike is represented in a number of private collections, including those of Peter de Francia, Christopher Cornford, Joseph Rykvert and Ramah Judah, and has had many one person shows.
