Statement:
What I express on canvas is the inner kingdom of the mankind: fears and hopes, faith, gods and devils, achievements, conquests and defeats. From the first hunters using flints and trying to cope with the hostile elements of nature, through to modern civilization.
I try to establish a link between those who worshipped the moon, and those who endeavor traveling light-years beyond it.
I am in search of the nightmare of the accursed and the heavenly vision of the blessed. I seek the hidden desires that nobody dares to tell and the dreams of mankind.
To tell the story, I often use the oldest form of communication: symbolic language. These symbols are a universal treasure which exposes the immense labyrinth of eternal tales.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
Born in 1952, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Pedro Wrede’s artistic apprenticeship occurred in diverse cultural environments. From 1964 to 1966 Pedro Wrede studied with Alfredo Sinclair in Panama, and as of 1970 in Uruguay. Initially with Alceu Ribeiro, who back in 1934 joined Torres-García's Asociación de Arte Constructivo, continuing his studies with Juan Storm between 1976 and 1979, and finally - from 1979 to 1983 - with Guillermo Fernández who was part of the Taller Torres-García.
He then decided to live and work in Spain. Between 1996 and 1992, he held solo exhibitions in Portugal –- Galeria Trinidade / O Porto –, and in Spain – Interarte / Valencia, Galeria Soloarte / La Coruña, Galeria Almirante / Madrid and participated in group exhibitions in Spain – Casa de Cultura de Alcobendas and Galeria Lagasca, both in Madrid – and in Switzerland – Europ’art in Geneva.
After his return to Brazil in 1993, Pedro Wrede participated in the 13th edition of the Salão Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Rio de Janeiro, and held a number of individual exhibitions: Galeria Tina Zappoli (Porto Alegre), Galeria Acaiaca (Curitiba), Galeria Portal (São Paulo), Galeria Manoel Macedo (Belo Horizonte) and at the Espaço Cultural dos Correios in Rio de Janeiro.
During the year 2003, his work was on show in the United States at LAAM - Latin American Art Museum and Serious Studios, both located in Miami and in Europe at “LineArtGent” / Belgium. In 2004, Pedro Wrede exhibited at AAI-Galerie of Vienna / Austria, in the show “Masters of the Imagination” at Agora Gallery of New York, and at “ArtCopenhagen” / Denmark, and in 2005 in the group show “The Meeting” at Galeria Tina Zappoli in Porto Alegre / Brasil.
Between 03 May and 04 June of 2006, the CCC – Centro Cultural Correios, Rio de Janeiro / Brasil, hosted a retrospective entitled “Human Paths”, uniting approximately 70 of Pedro Wrede´s most representative works created after his return to Brazil in 1993. Very recently, in Lisbon / Portugal, Pedro Wrede was one of six artists participating in Perve Gallery´s group exhibition entitled “Encontro de Periferias” (Encounter of Periferies). The topic of humanity was touched upon again in the exhibition “Humanity on the move” held at PESOProArte in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
Early 2007 his works participated in the art fair “ArtMadrid´07” in Madrid / Spain, followed by “Seleções da Arte Contemporânea Brasileira” (Selections of Brazilian Contemporary Art) at the Centro Cultural Correios in Rio de Janeiro, and in sequence and under the same title, at Versailles Galeria de Arte, Rio de Janeiro, the Cultural Center Mario Quintana in Porto Alegre, the Memorial of Curitiba, Curitiba, and in the Rubem Valentim Gallery at the Cultural Space 508 Sul in Brasília. Two more participations in exhibitions in this year, namely “Terra Adentro“ at Galeria Tina Zappoli, Porto Alegre, and in the art fair “PuroArte2007” in Vigo / Spain..
In 2008 and 2009, yet another presence of Pedro Wrede´s works in the art fair ArtMadrid ´08 / Spain and in the group exhibition “Olhar o Mundo” at Perve Gallery in Lisbon / Portugal.
Pedro Wrede presently lives and works in a quiet spot in the mountain range in the vicinity of Rio de Janeiro.
