Vita / Lebenslauf:
PREFACE

Raoul Gaillard writes stories, about the sea, about adventures, about storms which made us dream when we were children and for which we will forever thank Walter Scott, Jack London, Blaise Cendrars and so many others.
Grown-ups, we find the again the ghosts of these maritime legends: smoky pubs, cargo boats still in harbours or struggling in the waves, called up subtle sceneries where our dreams almost forgotten come out again through the music and poetry arising from each picture.

The painter works on paper, on which he spends long hours using pencils, tempera or watercolour from which appear moulds, spots and yellowed and hardened movingly photos of sailors of all ages and all times.

Time, actually is important : Raoul Gaillard makes himself humble in front of the enormous task . Slowly, magic operates, each sea lover can, through these beautiful and sometimes darks stories painted by the artist, rediscover his childhood’s wonders of his childhood.

Let us be taken away by magic

Helene Bellorget

What is the sea ?

This is a fisherman’s house, sheltered in a small valley, which coatches the ocean. Two wrack boats leaving the round belly of their hull along the ebb tide...
Women, with their skirts fixed at their belt, in water up to the waist, unloading the fish from a boat, just ran aground on the beach, to be the first ones at the market.
A whole family, mine ? Yours ? feet in water, looking at a peaceful horizon. Is it really peaceful ?
A liner, in a squall, leaves for an vague destination... The huge stern of cargo boat balancing between the sensuousness of its curves and the rust which will soon be part of its destiny.

The sea is everywhere in Gaillard’s work. It is, even unseen, the common tread of all paintings.

Warning to sailors : be careful of these suspended moments, of these incomplete stories ! behind the anecdote and the great formal beauty of these maritime sceneries, Raoul catches all the emotions of a past sometime very close returned to us without noise but without limits.

Don’t look at its pictures, each one is a wave which takes you and sweeps you away !

Emmanuel Davril

THE GLANCE OF THE PAINTER ON HIS WORK

To speak about its painting is always a delicate exercise for a painter. If it is necessary, it is because the work is not explicit. Any speech consequently becomes useless.

I thus prefer to evoke my pictorial reasoning which proposes the elements of a history, generally imaginary, which leave the way open so that each one grafts his own history there.

The topic is maritime, I know this world since childhood and I accept to be described of "nostalgic" : The maritime life and world of today do not make me any more dream. But nostalgia is not my principal concern which remains before all the achievement of an picture.

The workmanship is classic but, by the composition and the graphic expression, I endeavour to give a current picture.

I use paper, support which is appropriate for my mode of expression and is well adapted to the subjects that I cover. On this support, I work with simple means : watercolours and pencils. Simplicity of means does not want to say poverty of means. I consider that an idea carried out with simple means must be expressed with more force.

The extracts of poems which often accompany my exhibitions show the importance that I attach to the literature and in particular to the poetry.
