I begin a body of work by making quick gestural paint marks on several canvases without focusing on specific imagery. I select areas that appeal to me and use them as launching points to develop my paintings.
Bold Colors, organic shapes, and energetic brushwork inspire me. I really like artwork done by 19th and 20th century abstract expressionists, surrealists, and minimalists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, and Frank Stella. I identify with the way that abstract expressionists are inspired from within to create non-representational work.
Although formal art training is important, I think an artist must discover and develop their own voice and create a visual vocabulary of their own. This can’t be taught or copied and is the only way an artist can create truly original work.
My work is included in national and international private collections including the Pierce County Peninsula Branch Library, the Tacoma corporate office of State Farm Insurance, Tacoma software company Topia Technology, and John Madden, the colorful commentator of the National Football League. I have received several local art awards, and my achievements include being a biographee (merit-based) in the 2002-2008 editions of Who’s Who in American Art, Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the World, and Who’s Who in Finance and Industry.
I have worked as a newspaper reporter, a senior technical writer in the computer industry, and as a freelance graphic artist, frequently volunteering my time and designs for community work. I recently designed five permanent street banners installed in the Theater District of downtown Tacoma, WA. I have shown my work in Seattle, New York, and North Carolina, and my paintings are currently exhibited at Brick & Mortar Gallery in Tacoma, Washington, U
