Kunstart: Malerei
Technik: Ölmalerei
Stil: Abstrakt
Statement:
I start each project with an open mind: the subject matter of my painting chooses me.
It usually starts with an interest which triggers an emotion; always a positive emotion.
Once this occurs, l work to a rigid pattern. If it’s a landscape that inspires,
l will capture it in a series of sketches from dawn to dusk, in sun and in rain
as its response to light and mood constantly changes. History is usually important
to the subject matter. History is absorbed into the fabric of life. When I’ve
gathered all my visual and factual information and formed an emmotional link,
l begin preliminary work in which l refine my colours and composition - In the
final paintings a colour may be just a colour, or it may be an emotion or an
historical reference - there is more to a landscape than meets the eye. Then l start
the final phase and there is usually a lot of wasted canvas and paint before
something emerges to my liking. When l reach this point, l complete a series of works
– and begin the cycle again.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
Born in Shepton Mallett and now living in Dorchester, Dorset, Valerie spent many Summers during her youth in Graz Austria, where she accompanied her grand mother, a devout Catholic, to daily mass at the Bascillica of Maria-Trost.
It was during this time that her interest in art was awoken as she studied the statues and icons and the effect of light through the stained glass windows.
After 2 years exhibiting at the Llwellyn Alexander gallery in London she studied for a Foundation in Fine Art, then a Btec in Art & Design, before gaining a degree in Fine Art (Hons) at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth.
